Which vpn do you use on Apple TV?

tvOS17 has been updated on Apple TV for almost a month now. Someone in the community has shared a list of available vpns. Have you tried any of them? Feel free to share the vpn you use and your experience with it.

None yet, waiting for Nord to release an app as I’m all paid up with them already.

I use Surfshark using VPN Client Bee

None of the current crop of available VPNs seems to work seamlessly - might just be me, but they all tend to drop out, or are blocked by the various streamers… So I’ve given up for now.

What are some benefits of running a VPN on an Apple TV ?

I use a VPN exclusively for bicycle races, the current road race season just ended. So, I’m hoping Nord has an app by the time the new season starts.

Tailscale, because if Netflix are charging me for 5 people, I’m sharing it with another 4. Don’t gatekeep 4k content behind family plans and then get upset when we expect to be able to use them.

I use an extra router for VPN.

I tested the Swizz vpn. It worked well. I might get the lifetime option for $150.

I’m already on a 5 year paid subscription on NordVPN, which if your hoem IP address doesn’t get changed very often, or you have a fixed IP, is fine - as you can just put the SmartDNS 103.xx.xx.xx into your Apple TV under the wireless settings and you’re away.

However, because our internet at home is the NBn provided by vodafone, just using the apple TV DNS setting doesn’t work - because vodafone seem to be constantly changing our home IP address for no apparent reason, meaning Nord and the Apple TV need to be re-setup pretty much every time I want to use it.

The Firestick has a Nord VPN app, which works fine.

I’ve tried VPN Client Bee last night and uploaded the OpenVPN settings, got it setup (was kind of straightforward, hardest part was finding the various info I needed from Nord).

Here’s how to do it, if it helps anyone else (as I couldn’t really find any instructions/guide anywhere), nord has a page that tells you what vpn settings it recommends for a manually setup connection.

Go to this link on your computer:

https://nordvpn.com/servers/tools

Choose the country you want and make a note of the recommended server.

You can then go to this link to find that number and download the UDP and/or TCP settings:

https://nordvpn.com/ovpn/

You’ll also need the user and password details from Nord. Login to your account and click the nordVPn on the left bar

That will then take you to another page. Scroll down and click the Setup NORDVPN manually button. Once you’re in, you will see “Service Credentials”. A looooooong username and loooooong password. These are the 2 bits of information you will need to enter into VPN Client Bee at the 192.178.X.X. address it tells you to go to when you open the app.

So, now open the VPN Client BEE app on the apple TV, select the add new VPN.

Select OpenVPN

Now on your computer, put the 192.186.x.x. address into your browser. You’ll see a screen with VPN username and VPN password, and another button to upload settings.

Don’t try using the button to upload, navigating to the files, etc. I tried that and it didn’t work for me for some reason. Simply drag and drop the settings files into the browser one at a time.

You’ll see the connection config appear on your apple TV.

Now all you need to do is type in the NordVPN service credentials username and password in the two unpopulated fields on the apple tv screen.

Save or whatever, and that’s it.

Works much better for me having an app that connects to the VPN on demand, as when my home IP keep changing, it now no longer matters.

Downside is that you DO have to pay an annual fee (for me it’s $30 AUD I think), but until NordVPN pull their bloody finger out and release an app for TViOS, this is as good as it’s going to get.

I use Loon Lite with TorGuard’s premium proxy service. Runs smoothly and no disconnects so far.

Waiting for nord to release !

Tailscale! Works beautifully with my exit nodes.

Safeshell. Free. Works well

NordVpn with static IP. Dynamic IP was unreliable. Put vpn client in router with a watchdog so if it ever disconnects the watchdog retries until connected. Drops 1 min bout once or twice a week. Use router syslog & monitor app in mobile to know the vpn status.

hide me works fine for me.

so far Windscribe seems ok for US servers in Canada

Just had a conversation with Nord for the same reason I took my money back because of that they still don’t have anything for Apple TV or a TV generally

X-VPN, Vpnify works. I am using x-vpn, it’s decent.

I have spoken with Surfshark people ( I had their subscription earlier ) they have a native app in development. Should be released sometime early next year

I use FlowVPN. Works well on all devices
