someone i know is considering moving to a state their job doesn’t approve of (they already have a lease ready to sign) and we need to know if there’s any way to keep their ip in their current state / change it without the employer knowing.
unfortunately, i know nothing about computers outside simple html and java coding, so I’m not very helpful.
They’re gonna lose their job.
Yes it will show the geolocation of the IP address when they connect to the network.
Also not a r/tax expert but you will run into issues paying the taxes for the state you move to as the employer would need to know to deduct state taxes from your pay.
This is completely irrelevant. IP or no IP, there are different tax laws in each state and the employer will know. Whether that happens sooner or later, or involves the employee being charged with some kind of tax fraud if they don’t update their address, who knows.
If they want to leave the state, find a job that accommodates the location - or - if it’s a neighboring state, move right next to the border, if possible.
Not only will they be in trouble with their job but with uncle Sam as well. Not a smart move.
But in all honesty why would they consider the move without finding another job if they know this? Do they not value their position?
Your IP at your home is private for just your network. Once you access anything on the internet, your router will use a public address that you can’t change, and they will see the state they are in. The only thing that would show a different location is using a VPN and setting the VPN router to the desired state if that’s an option.
That being said, there are other things that might give away that you moves, like filing taxes, mailing address etc. Plus, people are human, they might forget to use the VPN one day and connect without it.
Geolocations of IPs aren’t super accurate (our static IP of our main office shows up as Buffalo, NY, 500 miles away). It’s also very uncommon to monitor them unless somebody was suspicious that the employee moved and requested the IT to look into it.
Your friend however will be fired within the next 12 months, be it from them attempting to use healthcare benefits, when they file taxes or they slip up and say something to the wrong person.
Employers don’t track locations of associates via their connected IP.
vpns aren’t expensive. honestly I doubt the average middle manager even knows what an IP is much less how to use it to track location.
Depends on how savvy the IT team is. They might get away with just having a VPN connected to the state they should be in.
Most of these VPNs operate on a subscription. If it goes off for whatever reasons, then the IT team might see that the device jumped between 2 states in the matter of 5 seconds- which would be super suspicious
This! Excellent thinking outside the box.
This is the answer, especially if OP only cares about the computer looking like it’s in a certain location, and nothing about any other legal aspects, like taxes.
a lot of people have vpns and the subs are not expensive at all. mines <$5/month. if I see the IP jumping to different locations I’m assuming vpn and moving on. got enough to deal with when the client is calling for urgent help cause he got scareware on his work computer from looking at porn or gambling.
lol it isn’t going to be paying attention to crap like that. they busy. with it shit. why does no one restart their damn computer?
The only time IT people check shit like this is when the boss or HR asks us to… for the most part I don’t give a shit what you do sans leaking sensitive info
