I had only intended to get the VPN service for one month as I was traveling. Before the next month rolled around, I had gotten on the app to cancel the subscription, thinking I could cancel from the app. It appeared to me that the subscription was already canceled due to the app saying that service would end one of the days at the beginning of this month. I figured I had already canceled it shortly after subscribing.
Once I was charged this month, I decided to go on the site to check. I had to dig a bit to find the subscriptions and successfully canceled it. I figured I could email support and have them do a refund due to the mistake. Despite it being their fault of engaging in deceptive practices to keep people from unsubscribing, they refused the refund despite me not using the VPN at all this month. Of course, in their response back they did not respond to my comment stating that their app made it seem like I had unsubscribed already.
If you unsubscribe, you need to make sure you find the subscriptions page on the website, not the app. Don’t trust it when you see it say that services will end. Make sure the subscription page shows canceled and that you got an email about the cancelation.
I had gotten on the app to cancel the subscription
There is no option to cancel a Nord subscription via the app, so I highly doubt you canceled it in the first place.
3. All Nord subscriptions are recurring, and this is clearly stated during the purchase process.
4. If you are within the 30-day money-back guarantee period, you will receive a refund. If not, simply cancel your subscription and move on.
5. Contact Nord and ensure you cancel your recurring subscription properly this time. Read the terms of service carefully before purchasing anything.
Locking the thread. There’s nothing more to discuss here.
Every VPN service uses auto renew by default, sadly many learn the lesson the way you did. Always cancel auto renew the second you buy a sub. Also, set a reminder to verify that auto renew is disabled at least 30 days before your sub ends as there have been many reported cases of auto renew magically being re-enabled.
Also note that if you have auto renew turned off, then add time to your sub when a deal comes around, it will be be enabled again so make sure to turn it off yet again.
Consider using virtual credit cards for subscriptions. It’s a PITA to set them up, but in return I know that I can cancel the credit card for a subscription without cancelling anything else. I’m using one for NORDvpn.
Ditto. NordVPN also offers solid deals if you resub at certain times so I’d suggest definitely not keeping auto sub on. For instance I just did their black Friday deal to re-up my sub that wasn’t due to end for another 6 months.
I also disable auto renew, but then I also use a temporary credit card number authorized for the subscription amount only, with the shortest-possible expiration date my bank card offers, usually about a month, tho it doesn’t really matter much if the avail credit is already zero after the subscription charge.
You have to be careful with that too. I use to do it right away, and on PS5 every time it downloads an update, it flips auto subscribe back on. I was so pissed, but Sony gave me a one time refund. Glad I moved on to PC at that point.
Subscriptions and the “you will own nothing, and be happy” is anything but happy, it creates methods for consumers to be abused and it is everywhere, hook line and sinker.
Most subscriptions use auto renew by default, but they don’t make it convoluted to cancel. They also don’t throw false info in your face like Nord does. Finally, if you reach out to many other subscriptions supports soon after being charged, they will understand the mistake and will refund and cancel your subscription, provided you have not used the service.
No, it’s dark patterns. I was absolutely convinced I’d cancelled Nord, I remember logging in and clicking when I signed up for another service a couple weeks back. Logged in today and boom, auto-renew is still going.
Rubbish, we offer magazine subscriptions and by default, we send an email near the end of the subscription with a link to renew. We don’t do it automatically unless the customer specifically asks us to. So not every subscription service is run by scumbags.
No mate, I’ve cancelled plenty of services in my time. Very few have I clicked through with intent to cancel, left convinced that I had done so, and later discovered that I somehow had not.
But please, reply again with more CAPITALIZED words to try and make your POINT on behalf of the scummy companies you’re SHILLING for here.
