Gday, XboxGamePass troubleshooters
For those of you having brutally slow downloads on the Xbox app for Windows and have exhausted the usual delivery optimization and 100% download allowance meter fixes,
I was able to achieve a bump in speeds from 10mbps to 60-90mbps by downloading games with a VPN on.
In my case, i paused my download, turned my ExpressVPN to Sydney (my closest server) and voila, speeds jumped from 1.5mb/s to its normal peak of 10mb/s.
Hope this helps someone else.
Update:
After 1 hour, the speed seems to have come back down to:
3mb/s with VPN
1mb/s without VPN
But that could also be because of peak traffic time.
can i ask why are you using vpn to download something you legally obtain? if it is for regio, microsoft does not care about the ip location. i play tell me why by changing my region to us, then change it back to normal.
Yeah Microsoft seems to really have something wrong happening at their regional servers or something.
I have a 1gbit fiber uncapped and at two different house locations (moved within the past month) my speeds remain the same. Somewhere round 10-20 MB/s and will never go above it.
Should be 80-90 MB/s in my personal opinion. Steam, Origin, Uplay all provide speeds at or very close to my network cap. XGP simply never has for the 1-2 years I’ve had XGP.
(*1 year later) For me, it constantly bumps up to max speed (around 9~10MB/s) when I turn on VPN. Without VPN it jumps back and forth. Get max speed for a while then it drops to 0MB/s. Sometimes it goes back to max speed after 1~2 minutes, sometimes more. It takes much longer than it should be to install a game. Not that frustrating but really inconvenient.
I live in SEA and the cable is broken now so maybe that’s a part of the problem.
I honestly don’t know why using a VPN would give me an additional 60mbps download.

Vpn stops what your IP sees you are doing. Your IP will slow downloads of games and movie streams from certain websites but the VPN stops them from seeing what you are doing with your data.
for some reason i can only download games from the xbox PC app with my VPN on. idk why, this just started happening. if I don’t, I get error code 0x87e00017
yeah ive got no idea. it’s nearly a deal breaker for me.
I asked because it still doesnt make sense to me, your reason is yours. I thought it was because of game/feature availability it is not necessary.
And i think it is available to your vpn only. I have a dedicated server in france and i am inturkey. I setup openvpn and my pc is connected to it 24/7 and i am not having that isdue. I can download full speed. But thanks for the heads up

I dont understand it either, my download speeds for Steam and Origin are fine. It’s just the Xbox Beta app on Windows 10 that im experiencing this issue with.
I have the same issue from Perth. It downloads VERY slowly without a vpn, but with one it almost goes at my max internet speed.
It’s really stupid and frustrating having to pay for a vpn for the app to do what its meant to…
Yeah its very strange, though tbh ive started trying to make it a habit of having a vpn on as much as possible anyway out of security.
