ZenMate is no longer free. Alternate VPNs?

So let me clarify. I don’t know what VPNs mean

All I want to do is access a few blocked websites for free, preferably through a Chrome extension (dont wanna mess with my computers internet settings).

I used to use Zenmate while it was free. I also tried Hotspot Shield but it gave me a BSOD (several months ago).

Currently I’m using Cyber Ghost

It seems like a bad idea to not know how a program works that you will use frequently.

Holy shit. You should not be using a VPN.

You’re routing your internet traffic, email logins, credit card purchases, literally anything you do online, through someone else’s server and you have no idea who they are or how it works?

Every bit of data you transmit over a VPN has to be paid for by somebody as it’s going in and out, twice, of their internet connection. That costs money. If they’re providing it for free, you have to ask yourself why. Why are they providing you something for free at a loss to them?

The quick answer is, they’re not. They’re making money off of you somehow. That could range anywhere from injecting ads, to snooping personal information to sell, to letting other people proxy through your internet connection so they can download child porn using your IP. Read up on the Hola controversy if you want some idea of how this has been done in the past.

If you need a VPN, pay for a reputable one. They’re not expensive. I (and many others on reddit) recommend PrivateInternetAccess.

I’ve just checked and ZenMate is still free as far as I can see, you only need to pay for any premium features, which is of course optional

I’m not using VPNs for everything. As I said, there are just a couple of blocked websites. But yes, I see your point.

I could have sworn that when they left beta they stopped free usage. Anyway, its free right now. Weird.
