I’ve been trying to get Japanese ebooks, but am coming across issues of not having a Japanese VPN. I don’t really want to pay for one - is there a way to get around this? I don’t just want PDFs, since I want to be able to look up words on my ipad. Thanks for your help!
Amazon Japan and kindle app
Try Bookwalker on your iPad. No region lock, goes directly through Apple Pay. I have my iPad system language set to Japanese and Bookwalker displays only Japanese books. I’m not sure what it does if your system language is English.
I live in the US and buy Japanese ebooks from Amazon Japan.
After you’ve registered your Amazon Japan account on a device, you have to go to Manage Your Content & Devices and change the region to Japan under the “Preferences” tab. You should be able to buy books then.
Harry Potter in Japanese on Kindle maybe? You can read it side by side with the original text in English.

One thing that definitely has to be set in order to buy Kindle books on Amazon Japan is: “Manage Your Content and Devices” > Country/Region Settings. This has to be set to Japan, otherwise it won’t work in my experience.
And once you have the Kindle books, the first thing I usually do is extract them to text using Calibre (you need an old version of the Kindle Cloud reader installed, won’t work with newer versions). Then I paste this text in japanese.io (my favorite way of reading at the moment) or use an iOS app called Wakaru to read the content. I’m quite disappointed with the Kindle built in dictionary lookup.

There’s ebook japan, which has an app as well. Don’t need a VPN. Can look up words and bookmark.
What are you talking about. I just bought Steel Ball Run volume 2 yesterday with no VPN, no problems, only an American address and American credit card.

I don’t mind paying for books, but VPNs are pretty expensive considering I’ll probably only use it to buy a couple kids books a year.
Amazon Japan is a separate website where you need to make a separate account. You can use an international address with Amazon Japan.
You need to use a vpn as well, but only for the first time, I used protovpn (it’s free) and it worked well
Yes, dictionary lookup works perfectly. There are plenty of free volumes and sample chapters to try out.
