Can somebody tell me what is secure core, P2P And TOR?
Secure-Core: You connect to a Server that is entirely owned by ProtonVPN and not rented, in a very privacy respecting country, which then routes you to your exit server. Therefore ensuring a maximum level of privacy and security.
P2P: Servers optimized for Peer-to-Peer (torrent) traffic.
Tor: You connect to that server and your entire connection is routed through the Tor Network.
I see the TOR symbol on the country but how do I know what specific server supports it? Is it all the servers in the list?
Though just to be clear, all ProtonVPN servers are owned and not rented, correct?
In Secure Core, what exactly does “your exit server” mean? When I ask my browser to go to supergizmatic.com, the traffic starts at my computer, then goes directly to some computer owned by ProtonVPN, and then… what?.., and then goes to supergizmatic.com?
To be clear, the reason I’m asking is because I’ve always been a bit reluctant to use Tor due to the exit node being able to see any data that is not encrypted. I would rather send such traffic through my ISP, whom I don’t particularly trust all that much but at least I know who they are, than through some unknown actor whom I also don’t trust.
I have been reluctant to use ProtonVPN for basically the same reason - it’s not clear to me what, if anything, they’re sending to before they send to the host I actually want to get to. Are they, for example, sending from their Secure Core server to some Tor exit node? If so, I don’t see how that would alleviate my concern.
P2P: Servers optimized for Peer-to-Peer (torrent) traffic.
Does this mean I can P2P on any server but it just might not work as fast?
I think you spent more time trying to drag OP through the dirt just to get your point across than you could have just helping.
If you’re going out of your way to teach a lesson, make sure it’s really valid otherwise you’ll just be acting toxic. I get that people ask vague questions but you can either be informative and kind, or you can ignore it. Anything else isn’t helping and just wastes everyone’s time.
Kind of a loaded question depending on who you ask. I guess it depends on what you’re trying to do. If you’re just browsing the interwebs then it doesn’t make much of a difference, imo.
The server should also have the Tor symbol next to it.
Most Servers are rented. The only servers owned by ProtonVPN are some in Sweden, Iceland and Switzerland. All servers are bare-metal and not a VM, though.
Your browser → secure-core server → normal server → supergizmatic.com
It’s basically to hide your IP from the normal server and make correlation attacks nearly impossible.
