I think I have seen it asked about here before, but a few years back there was a way to access The New York Times for free, although it was pretty wonky. We did bring back access for all students and you only need to authenticate once, and then have full access to your own account! So it is actually user friendly this time.
And don’t forget you do also have access to The Wall Street Journal in the same manner! csg.umich.edu/wsj
Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions or experience any issues.
Neat tip, didn’t know this was available. If you’re not a student or don’t have the option to make an account using this method, you can always just use this chrome extension to bypass the paywall without an account. Works on a lot of other paywall sites too, not just NYT.
So maybe I’m missing something, but when I navigate to accessnyt.com, search for UM-AA, it isn’t redirecting me to the registration page. I’ve tried hitting clicking the school name in the drop down, in the box above the dropdown (when it shows up), and even hitting enter, etc. Nothing.
I directly registered using my umich email from NYT’s main page, no confirmation emails or anything. Nothing in Junk/Spam folders, etc.
I’ve tried other schools on this accessnyt site as well (using my family’s various active academic accounts) and nothing works.
Unfortunately no. The Times does not offer an enterprise/institutional license for crossword or cooking. I believe you can add it and just pay the difference. If you want to do that and run into any issues send me a message.
Not as of a few months ago, at least. There was another thread about access to news sites and someone from CSG mentioned that they were looking at magazines like the Economist and the Atlantic, but hadn’t gotten access so far.
Could you try on another browser/device? This isn’t an issue I’ve heard of yet. You do have to get through that registration page; creating an account alone won’t work, even if it is a U-M email.
Yeah, we were offered a reasonable quote for The Economist but it is IP address access only so you’d have to be on campus or using the VPN and it would only be in your browser. We figured that wouldn’t really be as useful but the price of giving individual accounts like the Times and WSJ would be prohibitively expensive.
I don’t believe The Atlantic offers enterprise/institutional licenses. At least nothing I can find on their website.
As the top comment mentions, you can access the content only of most publications through the library. Problem is these are very user unfriendly. You can’t really browse, at least not like you could on the webpage of a publication, they often don’t include images, and there’s no way to open links from social media in those. And you have to be on the VPN. But if you want to access the content, those resources are there. Browsing the actual print editions of The Economist and The Atlantic might be less difficult than other publications.
I did try on a couple different browsers and devices last night. But your comment reminded me that I have a DNS-level ad blocker (PiHole). After I paused that, it works. Must be a redirect to an address that my ad blocker has previously blacklisted.
Thanks! Sorry for the confusion - your link works fine - just not with my ad blocker.
IP based access is great! Please reconsider! If it works on WiFi, VPN, Virtual Sites, and the library’s own EZproxy service it’ll be great enough for most use cases!
Your team could even offer directions on how to use the Chrome plugin to automate access!
Or just make a simple link available!!! Which works GREAT on mobile devices.
