So there’s this specific VPN app that has been trending where I live for a while now.
If used, it helps bypassing data limits set by the provider.
From what I know and understand, this shouldn’t be possible, but it does work somehow!
For example, if the mobile package you have has 5 GB data limit, using the app makes it possible to have unlimited data and any browsing done while on the VPN won’t count towards your original data limit.
I haven’t tried it myself yet, since the package I’m on isn’t supported but I can guarantee it works!
There are certain conditions that has to be met to make this work, like on Android, it will work with this specific provider and some packages, while on iOS it will work if you are using another provider, etc…
There’s literally hundreds of reviews and videos of REAL people using it and vouching for it and plenty of online shops selling subscriptions for it (cuz weirdly enough, you can’t subscribe or buy an account directly from the app, only through resellers).
It’s not even expensive, one month access costs $3-$10 (depends on the reseller).
I don’t want to share the name of the app or the country in public for privacy (Plus sub rules) reasons.
This is also not the first time I see or hear about a VPN app that does this where I live, there are residents from two specific nationalities I know for a fact they’ve been using some specific VPN apps for years that let them do this too, sadly all the videos that I came across talking about it are in their original language which I can’t understand.
Can someone please help me understand how this is possible? or if someone is willing to research more about this with me?
I’m guessing exploitation of faulty implementation by the telco.
Your ISP whitelists a certain domain (Maybe their portal/a payment gateway to renew your plan) even when you’re out of quota.
Someone figured out what this domain is, and using HTTP Proxy/SSH Tunneling tricks the ISP into thinking you’re accessing that whitelisted domain, when actually you’re not, you’re browsing the whole internet. And since they whitelist that domain, you’ll have unlimited data.
I’m curious what that app is though, my country used to have this kind of trick but then it was solved. So, I’d like to check if this app supports my ISP. Can you reply to my DM?
Probably the telco only measures tcp packets instead of udp? In any case, shame on them… but it’s technically possible they screwed up.
Data has to traverse both directions and in order for that to happen you must have a service plan. The vpn app traverses that connection no matter what you do. So all in all the provider is configured in a way that must ignore vpn type traffic or certain vpn traffic.
Yeah, I think something like this. Sometimes providers offer unlimited data with a specific service, like Facebook or their own streaming platform, so the VPN may have found an exploit for tricking that system.
Yeah, normally I know, I’m on an M1 MacBook Air 2020 and this works perfectly for me. Especially if you get within 20m of me I’m not 100% sure they are not impacting your day to day life too much.
I know and use. Aber naja
It isn’t a question of TCP versus UDP it’s a question of which network layer they are monitoring. If they are monitoring bandwidth only at the application layer (7) then it’s feasible. Otherwise it’s impossible to circumvent their bandwidth monitoring, unless they really screwed something up and someone is taking advantage of the vulnerability but that oversight will be noticed by the provider and patched quickly.
I highly doubt that’s the case.
