Is my DNS leaking?

So I’m new to using VPNs…

I’m currently setting everything up and just ran the test on dnsleak.com

My IP and DNS IP are shown to be in Sweden (I’m actually in Germany) but for some reason it says "Your DNS might be leaking…

Am I doing anything wrong? My DNS requests are ran over my VPNs DNS server right?

Run the test again with your VPN off. If you see the same server then you are leaking.

Sometimes a site like that has text to try to help you interpret the results.

[Edit: I suspect that site is trying to alarm you so you buy their advertised VPN. For me all three addresses were in same subnet, yet it said “you might be leaking”. Wrong.]

You could try a lot of other sites too:

https://www.doileak.com/

https://ipleak.net/

https://browserleaks.com/

https://www.deviceinfo.me/

http://www.maxa-tools.com/cookie-privacy.php

https://whoer.net/#extended

https://test-ipv6.com/

https://www.perfect-privacy.com/en/tests/check-ip

http://checkmyip.torrentprivacy.com/

Make sure you do not have any cookies, cache left from before. If you test with chrome browser you might have issues on clearing cache…

Make sure you do not have location on also. Nor, webrtc on in browser.

Try to use Brave browser. It seems to be “safer”, but all depends on you.

Try the DNS Leak Test website and see if all of your DNS servers are from Sweden too or at least just the ones the VPN is using

Recently I had a problem with my OpenVPN server leaking DNS (it was using one of my own ISP DNS instead of just the VPN DNS servers) and I used this tutorial to fix it

You also need to disable IPv6 and WebRTC and in your browser, especially if you are using OpenVPN instead of the VPN app. Always check for leaks. IPLEAK.net is a good place to do so.

Ignore the message " "Your DNS might be leaking… ".

If you see your local IP DNS, then your DNS is leaking, otherwise not.

The test you used checks to see if your DNS server IP matches your public IP. This may not be the case depending on how the VPN service works

But as already answered, check other sites. ipleak.net gives you a great run down of the IP addresses associated with you

It’s not my ISPs DNS server.

I can pitck different servers from my VPN provider in other countries and it shows the DNS server to be in the same country as the VPN server.

What I don’t understand is why dnsleak.com says my DNS might be leaking.

Is it the standard message when the DNS server is located in the same place as what appears to be my IP?

Nope. As stated above it was dnsleak.com

Both already disabled.

Thx

I was confused at first because I thought you were using dnsleaktest.com and I don’t see any such message like you describe. Then I realized you are using dnsleak.com, and I see the same message as you.

It doesn’t sound like you have a leak, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Seems like a standard message for everyone using a DNS server in the same place as his exit IP right?

It seems to be a Chrome problem. Using Opera will not have dns leaks. Google Chrome uses DNS over HTTPS by default with Google DNS.

I think the was that site works is that it shows you have a possible leak if your IP address is not the exact same as your DNS IP. Most VPNs don’t work like this, but some do. Probably the VPN company that made testing site works in this way, so they want to make it look like you have a leak if you’re not using their VPN service.
