Letter from dean of students for torrenting

just got a letter for torrenting a movie. They said its just a warning but I am worried as the specific movie I got caught for i installed months ago. I even downloaded a movie last night but just got the letter today. Would I get in trouble for the 10+ movies i installed BEFORE getting the letter? thanks

It’s likely they caught it with a tracker on that specific torrent so you should be fine for the rest. I definitely would recommend a VPN in the future though.

Edit for recommendations: like u/ploomyoctopus said, Nord is good and I’ve also had good experiences with Private Internet Access and Surfshark.

Honestly I don’t know if it’s the same or not but instead of torrenting via downloading I would just stream through a site like fmovies or something. It puts absolutely 0 of the legal trouble on you because you don’t actually have any content in your possession

It’s been a while since I have been on campus but what ever happened to dtella?

I mean, it is a hefty deal legally. Punishments can get quite expensive. I’d consider the dean’s warning a sign you should consider a vpn especially when doing questionable things on the internet. While I don’t disagree with your actions, movies are overpriced, I do think it would be stupid to pay thousands or face prison time for downloading a movie. I wouldn’t worry about it unless they say anything about law getting involved. I doubt they want that though seeing as Purdue really likes to keep things quiet.

They don’t care about the movie they just care that you are using a lot of bandwidth

Dean Katie cares more about torrenting than people who are SA’d on campus…

Does Dtella not exist anymore? Why would you need to torrent on campus.

What happened to Dtella? It was the only way to P2P back in the day there.

Is dtella not a thing anymore?

Idk just stop. You don’t need to pirate movies that badly.

V.P.N.

If you’re going to do it, and you’re not using a VPN… you’re asking for it.

I use Proton, basically anything BUT Nord is good nowadays especially after their breach.

OP, VPN is the way to go. Might I suggest Nord? I’ve been very happy with them for the past couple of years. Up to 3 free months of NordVPN: Get them right now | NordVPN

If you’re on Mac, private relay

Unfortunately due to a combination of lack of activity and ITaP changing the way ResNet works, dtella no longer works in dorms and will be fully shutting down soon.

Was just going to comment this. Is Dtella not a thing there anymore? No reason it shouldn’t be right?

not trynna become a felon for trying to watch ratatouille

movies are overpriced

Unless a movie is brand new, it’s like $3-4 to rent most movies and $5 to buy most movies on bluray. It’s really not that expensive

That’s not true… torrenting is literally one of the only things they care about
