Microsoft teams and VPN

Hello,

I am going to Asia and I have some questions regarding the use of VPN and microsoft teams.

For the context :

  • I am working in France
  • I will travel in Asia for a few months
  • My boss doesn’t care where I work (he even encourages me to travel lol)
  • But for company policy my IP needs to be in France
  • This is my own computer and I am checking for a VPN

My main use of the VPN will be for microsoft teams because I have 1 or 2 meetings per month

The problem is : I’ve heard people say that Microsoft teams sometimes fails to report the vpn address and still reports the local one

I was wondering :

Did you ever meet this kind of issue ?

Vpn and Teams is suboptimal… You should connect through the closest front door in Asia. Are you blocked by conditional access if you are outside of France? I doubt anyone would be checking your ip anyhow.
I would be more cautious on the human side of working abroad if not allowed by company policies. Insurance coverage and things like that.

You’re going on leave. You can miss the meetings. Have a break , like seriously

But it really depends on your VPN config (split tunnel vs full tunnel)

If you have a VPN to you work office firewall (in France) and it is a full tunnel VPN then you will have the same IP as if you were in office. As long as you are connected to the VPN it cannot fail. You can simply check on the what is my ip address sites via google.

I believe one way around this is to use the WEB BROWSER version of MS Teams. I think the desktop app will use split tunnel, but the web browser site will send everything through the VPN. Give it a try.

Full tunnel VPN doesn’t work for Teams meetings well. You’ll have delay issues.

No I cannot miss the meetings unfortunattely.

For the split tunnel and full tuneel :

  • Which one do you recommend ?
  • Can I have this config with a normal vpn (nord vpn, express vpn, proton, etc. ) ?

Have you try ?

Is it at least enough for following a meeting and speaking a little bit ?

Always full tunnel. If split tunnel, it means some of your traffic (ex. DNS) is not routed through your VPN and thus will expose your local IP/location.

Yeah we had a full tunnel for IT staff and they had issues. It worked but calls would drop and stuff like that.

ok thanks for your feedback
