Most websites and download links don't work when using onion over VPN. Is there a work around?

I use onion over VPN with TOR and TOR browser at times. But most websites seem to forbid access and the website never loads. Downloads from any website is also not possible. It says the server isnt allowed. Is there a work around? I mean, what’s the use of Onion over VPN if I can’t acces so many sites and can’t download anything.

To stay safe, follow these rules and educate yourself about Tor and .onion urls:

On DNM Safety:

  1. Only use marketplaces listed on daunt, tor taxi, or dark fail. Anything else is a scam.

  2. Dont use any sites listed on a “HiddenWiki” or some random shit you found on a search engine, a telegram channel, or website. You will be scammed.

  3. Only order domestic to domestic.

  4. Dont send your crypto directly from an exchange to a DNM deposit address.

  5. Read the DNM bible.

On educating yourself:

  1. Read the /r/onions wiki here.

  2. Read the /r/tor wiki here.

  3. Read the /r/deepweb wiki here.

I used to think VPN + Tor was the way to go, but someone pointed me to their documentation and it is actually recommended to NOT use a VPN with Tor in most cases, as this can compromise your privacy. Try it without the VPN, maybe it’ll work

Hello and welcome to /r/onions. When looking for .onion directories, indexes, or search engines, please check the sidebar here for some starting points or read our wiki.

Please take the time to read our /r/onion wiki and the /r/Tor wiki to educate yourself a bit more about Tor, the Tor Browser, and how .onion hidden services work.

There’s always a lot of different options regarding this. My understanding is either your ISP or VPN (if using tor on top of VPN will know your using the Tor browser. Using the tor browser isn’t big deal. However if using a VPN that doesn’t keep logs, and accepts crypto, ect, may be less likely (or at least put up more of a fight in turning over information on you, where a major ISP will turn over you info no question asked. (That’s the argument for in my understanding) I am not an expert and would advise you to do as much research as possible.

Oh damn. How though?

Edit: how does it compromise?

Yup. I have got VPN mostly covered. I’m just worried about ISP.

Here is the Tor Project’s advice on using a VPN with Tor that they are referring to.

P.S. Make sure to check out the wiki link at the bottom of that article for details.

The node that talks back to you is now talking to your VPN (a well known IP) before talking with you. Seems like possible correlating

It’s mostly for people not knowing how to secure everything and the VPN provider. Keeping logs, non anonymous payment, human error (user site) that can lead to the provider that hands over the details. I stopped using a VPN too, since I don’t see myself as an advanced user, even though I am actually good with Cybersecurity and everything. You can check it out on their site, it’s got a good explanation and I surely missed something or maybe explained something wrong

Doesn’t necessarily compromise, just why show your vpn what your doing… TOR works fine on its own… Read about settings for browser safety … That’s it
