NordVPN and Popcorn Time question

Hi,
I recently got a month nordvpn subscription so I could stream and download movies privately. I am trying to download some movies that don’t have many peers to the point where I get very low speed or sometimes next to nothing at all. Recently I read about how when you stream a movie using popcorn time, it downloads the movie to your computer in the background. Assuming I’m using a P2P server on the VPN, would there be any issues with getting the movies on my computer this way as opposed to downloading a standard torrent from a website? Like would an ISP pick up on it somehow despite the VPN? Thanks!

Popcorn Time relies on Bittorrent. You’re getting issues with Bittorrent because NordVPN su… well yes it does.

would there be any issues with getting the movies on my computer this way as opposed to downloading a standard torrent from a website?

See above

Like would an ISP pick up on it somehow despite the VPN?

Not if you don’t leak onto the ISP network. ISP doesn’t care, the trolls do.

Follow the above link to a guide with clients. Set it up according to screenshots and you’ll be forever* safe unlike with Bittorrent Web (complete trash). Last but not least pick a different VPN for better connectivity.

I set the App Killswitch to kill Popcorn Time and also BitTorrent Web client so that in case the connection did drop I would be safer. Didn’t know how to do that before but that by itself makes me feel better about things. Thanks!

I like Nord more than any of the others I’ve tried so I think I’ll stick with it but as for BT Web I was unaware there were (or in this case weren’t) settings I could use to ensure security and better speeds. Makes sense that a web client wouldn’t have them. I’ll swap to qBittorent because I’m most familiar with that. Thanks for the help and detailed explanation!

So just to make sure it’s okay to use PT or something similar (looking into stremio as an alternative) on VPN, but as for a client I’m better off using something that isn’t web based, like one of the ones in that post?

Doesn’t matter if it’s web-based, what matters is to have a client option to bind it to the VPN interface. This way it would be impossible for you to fuck up like if you forgot to start the VPN. Believe me, one day you will forget to. It’s a numbers game.

BT Web/uT web are just trash all around. Many other clients have web interfaces but that fact doesn’t change how they work on the machine.

Yeah it’s definitely happened to me before a few times and luckily I remember not too long after starting but I’d rather not have to take that risk. Reading the guide you linked and the bit about Nord not having port forwarding and that potentially being a reason why my downloads fail even if it’s only rarely makes me want to find a new one so I’ll check out my options and maybe once my Nord sub expires make a switch. Thanks again for all the help.
