Secure VPN using Windows 10 built-in VPN client

Largely thanks to this sub, I self-host a whole range of apps on my home server. Most of these aren’t made public and I access them via an OpenVPN service that I also self-host.

I’m about to move to a new Windows 10 laptop for work and won’t be able to install the OpenVPN client on it (but work has no problem with me using the built in VPN). What VPN server should I setup on my Ubuntu home server so that I can access it from my new Windows 10 laptop without installing any extra software on the laptop?

Thanks. I’ll take a look

I might well have a look at wire guard for access from my phone but for access from Windows doesn’t it require a client install?

Also, I’m not looking for a vpn provider, I’m looking to setup a vpn to provide secure access to my home server

Setting up Wireguard yourself is actually easier than OpenVPN
Not to mention it drains less battery on laptops and phones while being faster

Unfortunately you are pretty much second class citizen if you use Windows, the standalone windows client merely released few months ago

I keep meaning to take a look at wireguard - mainly because it’s shiny and new - I can’t say I’ve had any performance issues with openvpn. Once I found the kylemanna/openvpn container it was so easy to setup and I’ve never had any problems with it.

But wireguard is shiny and new so when I’ve got the time, I’ll definitely have a play.

However, the immediate problem remains getting access to my home network without installing anything new on a Win10 laptop. Back to l2tp ipsec :frowning:
