Both my PS4, and firestick, are hardwired to the router.
If the router, how much does it effect connectivity for online gaming?
Thank you.

Putting a vpn on your router will have it on all your devices. Just put it on the fire stick. Some banking groups and providers like Netflix may block you when using a vpn.
Don’t put it on your router unless your router is an enterprise class router that can handle the encryption overhead. This overhead is what will slow down your internet connection. If you don’t need every device on your network hiding behind the VPN, just put it on the fire stick.
A VPN will, except for rare cases, increase your latency in online games. When in doubt, you should only route your Fire stick through the VPN.
I have a different situation here where I’m deliberately routing my Switch through a VPN (that I’ve set up on a Raspberry Pi, not for the whole network) so online play works at all, because my ISP uses carrier-grade NAT for IPv4 which is not compatible with the console’s supported NAT traversal tech.
It will add latency for gaming. Can you give us a bit of background. What problem are you looking to solve with the vpn?
Run the VPN on your Firestick only. It will probably slow you Internet speeds if you put it on your router.
I’d only recommend setting up the vpn on the router if you have a decent router (more than a basic/cheap one that most people have) as the encryption would be facing on a basic router and could add extra latency to your gaming.
Also you might want to be able to turn your vpn off/on for certain devices depending on if you want to stream from netflix or other sites that don’t allow known vpn addresses.
No. Will just cause problems. Put it on your router.
My cousin wants to add a vpn to his new firestick, he has no idea and I’m more high tech than him and I still don’t understand. How do I add the VPN? Through the settings on the firestick? Can you help me?
Honestly, I just don’t want to get in trouble for using Kodi and other apps.
I have a Netgear Nighthawk
As long as your ps4 is for gaming only, then download a vpn on fire tv… Simple!
I wouldn’t.
It’s going to cause more issues and you’re going to have to deal with how to make an exception for 1 device and have those routed through the regular connection.
At that point, it’s just easier to add the VPN to the devices you need.
A nighthawk would probably do fine if setup to connect to a VPN.
It is just for gaming.
My wife does pay our bills through our laptop.
Could a VPN add a layer of security?
If she pays through a secure bank website then a vpn won’t provide a huge amount of security in most circumstances (ssl secure can be confirmed if the url starts with https instead of http). Vpn’s are about privacy in most cases. With public unsecure wifi (think Starbuck’s wifi with no password) vpn’s do provide a high level of security by, for example, preventing man in the middle attacks.
