Switching to MacOS, need VPN app!

Hi new here  , so I am switching to MacOS and I am currently using DrayTek Smart VPN Client on Windows. BUT on Mac OS they only support: SSL VPN, IPsec XAuth, and IKEv2 EAP. But I need to use L2TP/IPsec and do not want to use built-in service. Do you have any suggestions for a VPN app?

The are 3rd apps out there, bit in my experience the built services work better and MDM profiles can be given to users. I would try them before ruling them out

Outline works like a charm :ok_hand:t3:

L2tp/IPsec works on everything but it is going away at some point.

Betternet VPN is pretty good.

I tried purevpn and NordVPN and honestly, nord wins hands down.

So my MacBook Air M2 has a built in VPN feature for free? I know you can setup a VPN that you pay for, but it’s not free as far as I’m aware.

That’s not a configurable VPN client.

Thanks, also found this: Shimo

You are conflating the VPN software+VPN technology+the VPN service.

Some VPN software is paid, some is free.

Mac can connect to some VPN technologies natively, this user is asking for a VPN app (either free or paid) to connect to an appliance VPN at home, not a VPN comercial service in the cloud.

Chrome is also free, however you can use it to access paid services.

Conversely, I also have setup with open source VPN servers at home and at the office, to which I can connect for free when abroad.

If you are looking for OpenVPN compatibility you can also use:

Don’t understand what you mean by ā€œconfigurableā€. You can setup nord on a router with l2tp Setting up a router with NordVPN – Live Chat, VPN Setup, Troubleshooting | NordVPN Customer Support

Thanks, I have my eyes on Viscosity! Now just have to wait for my M2 to arrive  Will try out and post an update here. I will also try Shimo.

So, Viscosity also has a Windows client, I tried it and it only supports OpenVPN, I need more protocols, thanks you anyway. Once I get my MBA M2 I will try Shimo and post an update here.

You canā€˜t connect to anything else than NordVPN with that. VPNs are designed to connect to corporate networks. When OP is asking for a specific Protocol he obviously doesn’t need a ā€žvpn serviceā€œ.

Yea, I use VPNs to connect to remote servers of our clients to configure and maintain hardware, assist users and all that IT stuff … So a nice client is a must for me, so that I do not ā€œlitterā€ my incoming new M2 Mac. On the other side a way to be locally connected to my own network and clients (two different IPs) is also high on the list.

Ah right. Yep got you now. You can install anyconnect? You can also just install openvpn and use that.

Just to know, what is the disadvantage of the internal vpn client? it has always worked reliably for me. There are also hidden settings which can be set with a configuration profile. For example auto connect vpn when the computer is in a specific WiFi.

There are no disadvantages, it’s just that I like to separate OS build in stuff with SW in case I need to export VPNs and also, I use the device for personal use, so It’s nice to have a ā€œworkā€ environment and a ā€œhomeā€ one. So basically It comes down to my workflow and personal preferences.
