Like many others, I’m using Hola to access locked content on Netflix and recently I read about how apparently it shouldn’t be used. Problem is, as someone who’s not an expert in this area some things just go over my head. So, can someone ELI5 about the actual risks of Hola? For example, can I actually get in trouble for something someone did while using my connection? Have there been actual cases of this? Or is it just a privacy thing?
The most simplest way to say it is that those who used Hola were part of botnet
Hola free account can use your machine as an exit node for other VPN connections. Which may put you on the hook for possible illegal activity
Using a cheap VPN is far better than using a free VPN. In the free VPN you are the product.

Not unless you want to be in a botnet, and have all your info sold. IMO it’s very unsafe. Try to pay for a good VPN service, free means you’re the product.
Can you please explain what does it mean “have all your info sold”? Do you mean browsing history? Is this the main reason why Hola shouldn’t be used?
Hola works by routing your browsing through other people’s computers & other people’s traffic through your computer. Hola also has access to what you’re browsing.
Your worry should be that others are routing their browsing via your computer. What ever they’re browsing is linked back to your network/computer/phone, If it’s illegal and the authorities investigate, you’re their first stop.
Being part of a botnet is the main reason.
