I have been experimenting with AV. I have used Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee Webroot, and Bitdefender among others.
I recently got TotalAV…and I like it. Not sure how GOOD the protection actually is? But I’ve tried downloading many viruses and it caught them all. However, I’m not sophisticated to have the most underrated viruses to test. One thing I liked that I’ve seen so far is if a file is unrecognized, especially during installation it notifies you, halts the installation and sends the file in doubt to the “cloud” for advanced scanning.
What are your opinions on this AV? I know it’s not the big names and maybe not the most popular but with that all aside, protection wise how does it stack up? It has other features like a VPN, password vault, and data breach check (which actually worked) open subtitles was hacked and my email was associated with the site and it notified me instantly. Went to their website and right at the top it notifies you they were hacked and to change your password.
TotalAV is an PUP, aka its borderline an scam, https://www.mywot.com/scorecard/totalav.com.
Not to mention all they use is the Avira engine so theres no point of using it over say, Avira. They also use misleading marketing tactics, such as affiliate sites posing as review sites, bots on Trustpilot and Google Reviews, etc.
Also, regarding the cloud scanning, every antivirus has that, its just not everyone notifies the user of it.
Also also, an VPN does next to nothing for your security or privacy and the on TotalAV uses is just outsourced from Windscribe, you can get an password manager, like Bitwarden, for free, and the data breach check you can get by using haveibeenpwned.com, which it definitely uses to check for leaks.
It’s basically a scam, get rid of it, get a refund if you can, if you can’t then at least cancel any auto-renewal of the subscription.
So my parents pc had two different malware/phishing stuff with constant pop ups. I don’t know how legit or not they are but I installed total av for them and all of that is now gone. no more phishing none stop popups and critical error pop up screens.
Same horrible experience as for many of you here. They renewed service after a year without a warning, and without it ever having been mentioned when I bought it in the first place. They charged 119 usd. Couldn’t cancel on their website (which by the way offered cancellation for a 75% refund or something like it), talked to a rep, they offered a 50% refund. I had to request for full refund (per my rights) and cancellation of account over and over again. They employed a kind of sly intimidation, bullying, and gaslighting tactic to make me stay for another year for 19 usd. After an hour or so, they sent a cancellation link.
I followed the link, and thought it was over. A couple of hours later I received an email with a 107 refund that said we’re glad you decided to stay with us!
I had to go through the process of another talk with a rep, thankfully not as long as the first one.
Stay away.
It sucks!nI try to deactivate my subscription. I even had to pay for it, and they still write to me, that the subscription is still active.
TotalAV = TotalShit.
Windows = Takes a long time to connect with a very slow connection.
Mac = Doesn’t connect at all.
if you look at: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/manufacturer/protectednet/ you will see that the protection varies alot during the year, and that this has been going on for a long time… (It´s not fun to use it in it´s dips)
And yes! All antivirus softwares nowdays sends unknown suspicious files to the cloud for analysis… So this is not anything special for TotalAV…
I have no opinion on the other functions…
But I would NOT use TotalAV (as an antivirus) unless I have secured my computer properly, from the ground and up, first… (by using a similar way as mentioned here: https://winguider.se/en/how-to-best-secure-my-pc.html )
So GernaderJake from Destiny/Twitch is advertising a scam. Nothing to see here.
Total AV are total scammers. it’s an automatic renewal and you can’t cancel it through your account, you have to contact them to do it. and then they don’t. i am still trying to get my ‘subscription cancelled’ and my 2-week old renewal subscription cancelled…it’s been a week of zero reponses, and tonight on live chat, full on lied about my cancellation link being emailed…
Do not download the app. Even after deleting it, continue to be bill by them even though I never signed up for ANYTHING…
Super buggy and scam like. I downloaded the free trial and even after unclicking the box for open upon startup it would somehow open itself. Then it would show its own pop ups out of nowhere saying “activated 8 day premium trial” looked into that pop up and it said to click here to activate first 8 days free. Upon trying to uninstall it, there is no option from the app itself. Went to top menu bar up at screen and nothing was clickable. Not the apps name next to the apple logo, not file, not help. Even the left menu bar on the app itself wasn’t clickable and forced me to use my arrow keys and enter to navigate. I couldn’t even click the apple logo at the top of the menu bar on my mac. But when I open safari everything at the top is clickable. Seems like the app itself was taking away some basic features that in order to make it more difficult to remove. I use Avira instead which is way better. I had to go to the app folder to uninstall by dragging to trash and deleting but of course the prompt would come up “can’t move to trash because app is currently in use” even after quitting the app. So I had to find it in my dock, right click “force quit” and then I was finally able to delete it. Long story short don’t use totalav it’s a terrible AV. Better alternates that are also free would be literally anything else. Avira or malware bytes. Avira being a bit better, as they found somethings malware bytes overlooked.
I just realized that I had a subscription with them, and now I feel incredibly frustrated because they have charged me a whopping $500 over 2 years without my knowledge or consent. To make matters worse, they seem to be utterly unresponsive when it comes to providing any assistance with processing a refund. Despite reaching out three times and explaining my situation, all I’ve received in return are automated, generic copy-and-paste emails.
Borderline scammers. Stay away from TotalAV!
I found it Totally SUCKS. You try the free version, then if you don’t buy the paid version, you get large Pop-Ups in the right lower corner of your screen Every Thirty seconds that say things like “YOU’VE BEEN HACKED” "Just kidding, buy Total AV, and other such CONSTANT pop-ups. This company should be Outlawed!
TotalAv is a piece of crap.
I tried and installed it 2 days ago.
All of a sudden I noticed a huge degradation in my WiFi internet speed - to the point that I could not browse anymore. Just to make sure I checked the speed on another device where TotalAv was not installed and the speed there was just fine.
As soon as I uninstalled TotalAv on the original device, the internet speed returned to its normal speed.
this is a bot btw total av is a fucking scam lmao
Yeah I actually seen that. Malwarebytes detected it as a pup. I had no idea it had such a bad rep and how terrible it is. I don’t use the VPN (I use Nord) but I did use the PW manager, however I switched to my Nord pw manager.
I just want a lightweight AV not a security suite was hoping TotalAV was that…BUUUUT that was a big mistake. Should have stuck with Webroot I guess (at least over totalav)
I first saw total AV in 2018 when they hijacked the malwarebytes & bitwarden/ bitlocker during a update. I made contact back then & cancelled the expensive subscription the total AV set up & even had a refund. Within a week I found my laptop locked by ransomware.
I did get laptop running again by installing a new hard drive & replacement of RAM w/ upgrade however it must be residing in a chip or transistor or come through online as my 3rd hard drive is currently locked as main file cabinet is missing this time after I changed to linux.
Thank you for saying that! I found that out too, after using it. I think they’re paying out a lot to publications, to get scored higher. Something is up.
That’s an issue, TotalAV keeps the subscription even if you refund or end it, aka another reason why it’s a scam
